Rail catering host

Serves food and drink on trains, from trolleys and café bars to at-seat first-class service. The role combines hospitality with rail safety, as onboard teams support the guard in emergencies and with passengers needing assistance. Offers vary a lot between train operators, and some routes have trimmed their catering in recent years.

A real shift

Shifts follow a diagram of routes, often starting at a depot to load stock before departure. Service happens in motion along narrow aisles, with stock counts, card machines that lose signal in cuttings and tight connections between journeys. Overnight stays away from home base are part of some long-distance rosters.
