Regulars

Regulars are the heartbeat of a venue, providing steady revenue on quiet nights, an atmosphere that new guests can feel and word of mouth that no advert can buy. Remembering names, usual drinks, favourite tables and small stories builds loyalty, and teams that pass this knowledge on at briefings make every regular feel known. Booking systems with guest notes help, but they need to be accurate, respectful and compliant with data protection rules. Simple gestures matter more than formal loyalty schemes: a first drink poured as they sit down, a heads-up about a new dish, a quiet word when a favourite member of staff leaves.

Regulars can also become territorial, expecting the same table, special treatment or tolerance of behaviour that would not be accepted from others, and managers sometimes have to set kind but firm boundaries. Losing a regular is a warning sign worth investigating. Venues that treat every first-timer as a potential regular tend to build the strongest communities.

What we ask on the show

  • Who's the regular you'll never forget, and why?
  • How do you keep regulars happy without creating a two-tier venue?
  • What happens when a regular crosses a line?
  • How do you turn a first-time guest into a regular?
